Powes says " I am ready if the people want me"

The current leadership in Papua New Guinea needs to be altered so that corrupt and deceitful ways needs to be minimized. The country has had enough of suffering at the hands of greedy pot-bellied courrupt politicians for too long. Coming out of their comfort zones to speak against corruption and rally behind likeminded leaders to lead us in the next five years after 2012 is Mr. Chris Koma and Eric Alom.

These two young men who care less about what they do, spend time  and their tireless efforts going out of their own ways to ask people to support leaders who show signs of good leadership. They are among so many  Papua New Guineans who are so concerned about how Papua New Guinea is governed by so called leaders in all levels of government.

Therefore, Mr. Koma and Alom approached the governor of National Capital District, Mr. Powes Parkop, if he has any interest in the country's top post to lead us into the next five years after 2012. Since taking office in 2007, Parkop has changed the image of the nation's capital (Port Moresby) and continue to let his actions speak for him.

Below is a positive responsive from Mr. Parkop when the two gentlemen asked his intentions come 2012.
Powes says " I am ready if the people want me". Fellow Papua New Guineans, Governor Powes Parkop whom we have dedicated this forum (Facebook: Parkop for PM - 2012) to wishes to commend you all for your support and heartfelt gestures. He says hes seen the forum and hes aware of it but could not comment about it because he was new to fb and was learning. He says he will post informations very soon. Here are some of the points he made in his correspondence with me:

1. My only ambition in politics is to make a difference for our nation and our people, especially for our yong people and the generations who are yet to come as their future we hold in our hand.

2. I am not in politics for the power, glory, perks and privilege etc. I am here to make a differerence and that is all that matters.

3. Our nation has been so blessed with abundance of resources that has given us the ability to transfor the life of our people and the generation yet to come but we are squandering it all very quickly due to poor leadership, mismanagement, outright stealing and poor decisions. At the end of the day, a nation rise and fall on the quality of its leadership and that is our biggest challenge up to now.

4. Personally I am ready to play any role that our people wants me to play. I am ready for anything or any challenge but its up to our people. I am not power hungry or over ambitious. I try to take one step at a time, do my best where I am and leave the rest to our people to decide.

So you can assure all our citizens and non citizens alike who are in that network that I am more than ready for any role that our people so decides that I could play or should play. I am passing through history just like all of us and I am determine to do my best in whatever role or position our people so decide I can or should play.

We now know the man has spoken. It is our turn to turn the heat on and get the momentum going. " we will see light at the end of the tunnel if we believe and start acting"

God Bless PNG!

So what has Mr Parkop's voting history been since elected? What has he done since being elected to end corruption and bring in good governance? Has he spoken out against the present leadership and voted against bribery and corruption?

Now if the scramble is on to try and jockey for position after a possible leadership spill happens, exactly who has shown they have produced a detailed plan to get PNG back on track and are prepared to guarantee be held responsible and accountable for putting their plan into operation and ensuring they stick to it?

Assess a person on what they have done, not what they say.

Paul,

Let me enlighten you on some some facts here.

Soon after Powes got elected, he made it public that he would join the govt if someone other than, Somare takes the PM's post. Unfortunately, that didn't happen, so he opted to team up with the opposition.

When you compare Powes with almost all the other MPs, he is miles ahead in terms of service delivery and stern political will.

The transformation of Port Moresby city is testament to his worth and credibility.

Not only, that, he is able to stand up and make very unpopular decisions such as banning betel nuts sales in the city, revoking unscrupulous contracts with N.C.D.C that have been milking the commission all along, laying off unproductive staff, being the first politician politician to break the taboo in Supporting West Papua for self governance and the list goes on.

He has proven to use the available funds at his disposal to invest in impact projects withing the city and he's likened by many.

Perhaps, there are other credible leaders out there, but I'm yet to see someone living up to the benchmark set by Powes.

IMHO, I would want Powes to take the nation's top post.

Hi Syl,

thanks for your response and that info. It does sound like Mr Parkop is prepared to make some necessary, if unpopular decisions. That being said, banning buai sellers and laying off unproductive staff is just the start.

What happens as you know, is when politicians actually get elected they change their focus. That applies to all politicians and not just PNG ones.

By setting out a plan (wrapped up in a publically stated policy) that everyone knows about before the election and votes to have implemented is the first step along the right way. The second step is to be prepared to be held responsible and accountable for the implementation of what everyone voted for. That's the essential issue. Will the person who is voted in be prepared to be held accountable?

Clearly that isn't happening in PNG at the moment. Can PNG leaders actually be held accountable? You bet! But only if there are PNG leaders who are prepared to use the powers in the PNG Constitution to hold the members of the current government accountable. What has Mr Parkop done in this crucial area?

Up until now, no one seems to be able to hold the present leaders accountable for PNG's present state of affairs. That includes the current Opposition, The Ombudsman, The Police, The Judiciary, etc.

Why would Mr Parkop be any different if he got the top job? That's what I would be asking Mr Parkop to state unequivocally if he is serious about standing.

kind regards,

Paul
