THE Mt Hagen city authority workers started cleaning up the city on Monday.
The operation was carried out after a joint meeting by the presidents of Mt Hagen rural and urban local level governments (LLGs) with their ward councillors last Friday at Hotel Kimininga.
The joint meeting was spearheaded by former deputy governor and Hagen rural LLG president Wai Rapa and Hagen urban president and city mayor Titus Doa.
The city authorities removed all illegal city vendors on Monday and were continuing to clean up all parts of the city, Mr Doa said.
He told The National yesterday that tucker boxes and containers remained in the city but would be removed tomorrow with the help of the police.
He said that illegal traders had been warned several times to vacate the areas but the notices had fallen on deaf ears.
“If they continue to resist our orders, then we’ll forcefully remove the containers with the assistance from the police and heap them at Kerebug dumpsite,” Mr Doa said.
He said arrangements had been made with a trucking company in the city.
The company would provide them with a side lifter to remove the containers and tucker boxes.
Mr Doa also appealed to all local MPs in the province to assist financially to support the push to clean up the city.
He added that his administration lacked finances to carry out operations in the city.
The tax collection authority had been delegated to the provincial government, he said.
Mr Doa thanked Mr Rapa for pledging his support for the first time to back the city council in the clean-up.

I applaud Mr. Wai Rapa's decision to join hands with the Mt. Hagen City Authority to clean the city. I hope Mt. Hagen will retain it's beauty and everyone will love to see that happen but only time would tell.
