A glance at why attitude is a problem in Papua New Guinea

By Waizmarean

I am a student and have not exposed to the public services or any environment that I could get the glimpse of the type attitudes demonstrated by our national professionals, countrymen and women which can have detrimental effect on the development of our country. You guys and gens can share with us on that.

One thing I have observed is that there is a growing trend that many of our generation dislike our own cultures, systems and the way of doing things. I see many of our educated elites even the university students dislike our Melanesian way of doing things and organizing activities and so forth.

We seemed to emotionally carried away by the fantastic culture of the western that has little importance to our society or country. For instance; too much enjoyment and talk about the NRL in Australia. Many young children in this country and even the adults are becoming crazy of games played in Australia.

If you ask some school children to give you the name of all the NRL stars in Australia, they will do so perfectly. Everywhere in PNG, this sort of interest on the culture of other countries is growing which is putting our own cultures down the drain. What type of generation are we grooming up in for the future?

In comparison to our national players, you won’t see much support from our people. Why can’t we promote our own players than skiing up for someone success which you will not benefit? Any, what do you think about this situation? Is it not an attitude problem? If so then some of us who go crazy about such must stop immediately now if we wan behavior change.

Secondly, its seems that our people and even the government and the leaders give a lot of homage and respect to those foreigners who sometimes try to deceive us by exposing our weaknesses to the world. We believe what the European men say is always true so we node our head without actually analyzing the long term consequences that will have on our moral conscience and the country as a whole.

This may start from the national or executive level down to the institutions and communities. Why can’t we promote our local PhD, Masters Holders and scientists by recognizing them and promote them on the international market? Why are we developing a mind that is likely to suppress the capabilities of Papua New Guineans?

Respect for one another is what most Papua New Guinea lack. The so called big man mentality. YU TU MAN...MI TU MAN YA….no care attitude. How can we change the mindset of our uneducated people? The onus is in us the educated elites to educate the people in the villages about the reality of whats happening in this county.

Generally, many children of educated and big shorts face a lot of attitude problems in this country. Why is the QUESTION? Because their parents so called the educated elites do not educate their children about their behavior. That also means that elites are ignorant and therefore must start to lots of awareness especially in the rural areas.

If we’re in office someway in Moresby, Lae or wherever and haven’t address our people about these then we won’t understand the reality.
