Ways Papua New Guineans can learn to help others

If your heart has been gripped by the needs of the hungry, thirsty, strangers on the streets, fellow friends, neighbours, and foes; here are four effective ways to help fellow Papua New Guineans in your communities (these attributes can be applicable to anyone who thinks of "serving'' his/her community worldwide).

1) Volunteerism

The most productive way to get started helping those that are around your neighbourhood is to join forces with a well-established operation. As a volunteer you will learn from those who are already making a difference, rather than repeating the mistakes of well-meaning but misguided novices. By receiving "on the job" training, with these established non-governmental organizations (NGO), you will be able to experience the rewards of accomplishment right away.

A good place to start volunteering is at your local church. If your congregation doesn't have a service ministry, find a reputable organization in your city and invite church members to join you and your family in serving.

2) Respect

One of the best ways to help each other is to show others respect. As you look into their eyes, talk to others with genuine interest, and recognize their value as an individual, you will give them a sense of dignity that they rarely experience. Respect starts at home.

Instead, make your donations to a well-known, reputable non governmental (NGO) organization in your community. Many shelters, soup kitchens, HIV/AIDS Orphanage, Cheshire Homes, prisons, hospitals, etc... in Papua New Guinea also welcome contributions of food, clothing and other supplies. Giving your time and resources is also essential, too!

Lastly, prayer is one of the easiest and most positive ways you can help those who are in need and the country as a whole, especially when Papua New Guinea is going through some tough political, economic, and social issues. Because of the harshness of our lives, many of us are crushed in spirit.

But Psalm 34:17-18 says, "The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." (NIV)

Deck of Cards: An appealing insight

It was quiet that day, the guns and the mortars, and land mines for some reason hadn't been heard. The young soldier knew it was Sunday, the holiest day of the week. As he was sitting there, he got out an old deck of cards and laid them out across his bunk. Just then an army sergeant came in and said, 'Why aren't you with the rest of the platoon?' The soldier replied, 'I thought I would stay behind and spend some time with the Lord.'

The sergeant said, 'Looks to me like you're going to play cards.' The soldier said, 'No, sir. You see, since we are not allowed to have Bibles or other spiritual books in this country, I've decided to talk to the Lord by studying this deck of cards.' The sergeant asked in disbelief, 'How will you do that?' 'You see the Ace, Sergeant? It reminds me that there is only one God.
The Two represents the two parts of the Bible, Old and New Testaments The Three represents the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost. The Four stands for the Four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John . The Five is for the five virgins there were ten but only five of them were glorified. The Six is for the six days it took God to create the Heavens and Earth.The Seven is for the day God rested after making His Creation.

The Eight is for the family of Noah and his wife, their three sons and their wives -- the eight people God spared from the flood that destroyed the Earth. The Nine is for the lepers that Jesus cleansed of leprosy He cleansed ten, but nine never thanked Him. The Ten represents the Ten Commandments that God handed down to Moses on tablets made of stone.

The Jack is a reminder of Satan, one of God's first angels, but he got kicked out of heaven for his sly and wicked ways and is now the joker of eternal hell. The Queen stands for the Virgin Mary. The King stands for Jesus, for he is the King of all kings. When I count the dots on all the cards, I come up with 365 total, one for every day of the year.

There are a total of 52 cards in a deck; each is a week - 52 weeks in a year. The four suits represent the four seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Each suit has thirteen cards -- there are exactly thirteen weeks in a quarter.

So when I want to talk to God and thank Him, I just pull out this old deck of cards and they remind me of all that I have to be thankful for.' The sergeant just stood there. After a minute, with tears in his eyes and pain in his heart, he said, 'Soldier, can I borrow that deck of cards?'

Clinging onto Jesus Christ can be a great witness

After living what I felt was a 'decent' life, my time on earth came to the end. The first thing I remember is sitting on a bench in the waiting room of what I thought to be a court house. The doors opened and I was instructed to come in and have a seat by the defense table. As I looked around I saw the 'prosecutor.'

He was a villainous looking gent who snarled as he stared at me.. He definitely was the most evil person I have ever seen. I sat down and looked to my left and there sat My Attorney, kind and gentle looking man whose appearance seemed so familiar to me, I felt I knew Him. The corner door flew open and there appeared the Judge in full flowing robes. He commanded an awesome presence as He moved across the room I couldn't take my eyes off Him. As He took His seat behind the bench, He said, 'Let us begin.'

The prosecutor rose and said, 'My name is Satan and I am here to show you why this man belongs in hell.' He proceeded to tell of lies that I told, things that I stole, and In the past when I cheated others. Satan told of other horrible Perversions that were once in my life and the more he spoke, the further down in my seat I sank.

I was so embarrassed that I couldn't look at anyone, even my own Attorney, as the Devil told of sins that even I had completely forgotten about.As upset as I was at Satan for telling all these things about me, I was equally upset at My Attorney who sat there silently not offering any form of defense at all. I know I had been guilty of those things, but I had done some good in my life - couldn't that at least equal out part of the harm I'd done?

Paid in Full by Christ

Satan finished with a fury and said, 'This man belongs in hell, he is guilty of all that I have charged and there is not a person who can prove otherwise.' When it was His turn, My Attorney first asked if He might approach the bench. The Judge allowed this over the strong objection of Satan, and beckoned Him to come forward.

As He got up and started walking, I was able to see Him in His full splendor and majesty. I realized why He seemed so familiar; this was Jesus representing me, my Lord and my Savior.He stopped at the bench and softly said to the Judge, 'Hi, Dad,' and then He turned to address the court. 'Satan was correct in saying that this man had sinned, I won't deny any of these allegations.

And, yes, the wages of sin is death, and this man deserves to be punished.' Jesus took a deep breath and turned to His Father with outstretched arms and proclaimed, 'However, I died on the cross so that this person might have eternal life and he has accepted Me as his Savior, so he is Mine.' My Lord continued with, 'His name is written in the Book of Life, and no one can snatch him from Me. Satan still does not understand yet. This man is not to be given justice, but rather mercy.'

As Jesus sat down, He quietly paused, looked at His Father and said, 'There is nothing else that needs to be done.' 'I've done it all.' The Judge lifted His mighty hand and slammed the gavel down. The following words bellowed from His lips. 'This man is free.. The penalty for him has already been paid in full. 'Case dismissed.'

As my Lord led me away, I could hear Satan ranting and raving, 'I won't give up, I will win the next one.'I asked Jesus as He gave me my instructions where to go next, 'Have you ever lost a case?' Christ lovingly smiled and said,'Everyone that has come to Me and asked Me to represent them has received the same verdict as you, ~Paid In Full~'

The "Friendship" dwells way, way down deep in the heart and soul of a person or individuals. You don't know how this "Friendship" happens, it just happens so soulfully... It is a light from the "Friendship" that provides sunlight to the soul whenever it happens.

Knowing what a big difference encouragement makes in your life. What can you do to help others 'to take heart' when the going gets tough and way feels long?

You can use encouragement as an outreach. If anyone should be known for being an encourager, is should be the Christian. Become aware of what encourages you, and do those same things for others. If an encouraging thought comes to mind, share it! It may not have the same effect if you wait. Don't let shyness hold you back. Instead, form a new habit. "Encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today..." (Hebrews 3:13)


Add a few words of praise for the person's abilities, accomplishment, about how they've helped you or about the nature of your relationship. Encourage, your friends, co-workers, parents, siblings, neighbors, people in your church, teachers, doctors, grandparents, ill or infirmed, disfranchised..., etc...

When someone is discouraged or hurting, offer specific, practical help. It's better to ask, "Would it help if I... (specific action)?" or say, "I would like to... (specific action)?" As a Christian, remind fellow Christians and those around you and in your neighborhood of the specific promises of God and characteristics of God.

We may know something with our mind, but need to be reminded in our heart. The Apostle Peter wrote, "I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have" (2 Peter 1:12).

Simply say, write someone a note to tell them that you are praying for them. Tell them what you're praying. You can pray specific scriptures for individuals such as Romans 15:13, " [I pray that] the God of hope [will] fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Crowds flock to see ‘miracle’

A bleeding statue of Jesus on the cross? or a sweating Jesus crucifix? Thousands of people are flocking to little known Balada village in the Bitapaka Local Level Government area of East New Britain to witness the phenomenon or miracle as this unexplained event is being described. They are coming from all over the province to hear the story from 19-year-old Mary Kuna, who is believed to have witnessed blood pouring from a statue of Jesus on the cross since Friday March 20 around midday in her family home.

Then on the next day water or what she describes as sweat began dripping from the crucifix. She said the crucifix had so far filled seven cups with what they think is blood and 20 dishes of what they think is sweat.The Post-Courier yesterday visited the family and found that a temporary shelter had been built for people to come and pray and judge for themselves whether to believe in what they saw or not.

Ms Kuna, who is a member of a youth prayer group, said she was reciting the chaplet of divine mercy and rosary at the time it happened. “While I was praying I heard a noise like a rat crawling around the roof, so I didn’t take much notice.“Then the noise started getting louder which disturbed me,” she said. “When I went to check the noise it was coming from a closed plastic bag which had a new Jesus crucifix inside that I was given as a gift from friends in Wewak,”Ms Kuna said. “When I looked at the plastic bag I noticed that there was a reddish liquid forming inside.

“The sight of it scared me and made me numb and I didn’t know what to do,” she added.Ms Kuna then opened the bag and poured the contents from the Jesus crucifix into a cup.She said she knew that she had to go and tell someone about it. “My dad didn’t believe me and waved me away and continued to tend to his cocoa trees,” she said.She then went to tell her friend Josephine from the prayer group.“When we opened the door to the room there was a strong odour like the smell of blood from a hospital.

“The cup was also still filling up and had to be emptied,” Ms Kuna said. From there the news spread like wild-fire in the nearby community. She believes it is a miracle and should be shared with everybody. People coming with their own water bottles were given portions of the water to take home as well.They had also asked a Catholic auxiliary bishop to see for himself, and it is alleged that he has declared it a miracle. By yesterday, she said water and blood was still flowing together.

Archbishop has ‘no answers’

The alleged phenomenon or miracle should not be exaggerated.This was all the head of the Catholic Church in East New Britain Province, Archbishop Karl Hesse would say at this point in time. When contacted yesterday afternoon to comment, Archbishop Hesse said he had no answer to any questions on this issue at this stage. “I’ve not physically seen this strange event and therefore cannot comment. “I can only rely on reports coming back to my office,” he added.He further said that he might not be able to make any comment for the next two weeks as he would be leaving for Kimbe.

It is understood that Father Karl, who is the local parish priest at nearby Tapo village, has been monitoring the situation and keeping the church informed. The occurrence happened over a week ago at nearby Balada village in the Bitapaka local level government area, about 30 minutes drive outside of Kokopo Town. It has been described as a miracle for 19-year-old Mary Kuna, who allegedly witnessed blood and water seeping from her small Jesus crucifix at her home.

Since that day on Friday March 20, thousands of people from throughout the province have flocked to see for themselves the unusual happening. She said the crucifix had so far allegedly filled seven cups of blood and 20 dishes of water, which she described as sweat. People from all walks of life have been calling in and spending time to pray and listen to Ms Kuna’s story.

She said that there were people who were curious, believers in the miracle, or doubters. She believes it is a miracle and should be shared with everybody. Since yesterday’s report and picture on the front page of the Post-Courier, the head office in Port Moresby and the bureau in Kokopo have been flooded with calls on the authenticity of the phenomenon.
